Entitled coworker pressures employee to give up vacation day for her wedding, employee refuses, prompting backlash: 'I said I didn't want to do that!'

Vacation days are precious. Why would you give them away to someone who wouldn't return the favor?

These two coworkers were not friends. In fact, they barely interacted except for a few pleasant exchanges in the office kitchenette. The author should have known that something was up the second her coworker pulled her aside to ask her something in confidence.

For some background information, at this company, it was really difficult to schedule PTO directly before or after a national holiday. So when this employee decided to take the day after Martin Luther King Day off, she had to schedule this day almost a year in advance in order to ensure that she could claim it. This meant that it would be even more difficult for other coworkers to take off on that same day due to a need for "all hands on deck" after federal vacation days, especially if someone tries to make a request at the last minute.

That's exactly what happened to this author's coworker. She managed to schedule six days off for her upcoming wedding but decided that she needed an additional day. She was told by human resources that this was not possible, given the fact that the author had already scheduled off that day. So rather than try to use her wedding as an excuse with HR or take a sick day, the coworker decided that she was well within her rights to march up to the author and try to convince her to give up her day. Again, the author had scheduled this day off almost a year in advance. Why should she have to suffer just because the coworker is getting married?

The coworker is not the only person to blame here. Sure, she was entitled to think she could convince the author to give up her vacation just for the sake of her own wedding (which the coworker wasn't even invited to, but I digress). Still, the real people at fault here are the senior managers of this company.
Workers should not have to feel the need to request a single day of PTO an entire year in advance in order to avoid conflicts with other coworkers. Furthermore, if the operations of this business cannot function when two individuals are gone on the same day, then that is not the fault of the employees. That's on the business itself!
